Free Unlimited Online File Storage

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 148 words

There are many services that allow unlimited file storage on the net, but not many that are as easy to use as MyBloop. Not only does MyBloop let you upload
unlimited files, but you can also search the service for any file that has been uploaded by other users, which makes it a great place to share and to find
content as well.

The service is free, and almost any file can be uploaded, although each file has to be smaller than 1GB. Still, that should be big enough for most people.
Don't worry, if you want to upload your MP3 collection, you can, and if someone wants a copy of a song you have, they are sent to Amazon where they can
legally purchase it. There are other options that make this service a one-of-a-kind,
you can check them all out by visiting http://www.mybloop.com No Trackbacks

Create a Custom Streaming Internet Station

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 394 words

A new breed of Internet radio stations allow you to create your own custom streaming station, edit it, skip songs at will, share your station with others,
and discuss music. Unlike Pandora, which is a veteran in this field and is difficult, if not impossible, to use with screen readers, with no hope for change
in sight, Jango, currently in beta, is very user-friendly.

To get you started, here's a little tour of some of their main features:

list of 5 items
• Stations: Play your selected artists (plus similar artists we recommend) To create a new station, just type in an artist and press play. To add more artists,
just go to "My Home" and click "Add to Station".
• Rate which songs to play more (or less): To make your stations even smarter, just click the smilies in your player to rate which songs you want to play
more or less. Screen reader users will find three rating links, bad, OK, and good.
• Tune in to other stations: The faces in your player are other people listening to similar music as > you are. Just click any song to tune in and listen!
• Play more songs by an artist: If you want to play more songs by an artist, just click the orange "Songs" tab in your player - or any artist photo - and
you'll see more songs by > that artist that you can tune in to!
• More music and people: Don't forget to check out the "music" section, where you can browse by genre and see what's new and popular on Jango. Or click
"people" to search for friends and musical like-minds.
list end

Note to people using a screen reader: The site works very well, my only problem is with the volume control. I think they use some kind of slider that JAWS
can't access. I have not tried this control with other screen readers, but have no reason to believe that they will work any better. I have emailed a suggestion
to the tech folks, hopefully I'll get a response.

Having said that, don't let the volume controls scare you away from the service. It is really cool and I've built one station as of the time of this post.
I plan to create others very soon.

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 94 words

Dropbox is a good way to share files with students, friends, parents or coworkers. Dropbox is particularly useful for sharing large files like MP3s or slide
shows. Rather than mass emailing an attachment you can share a file through Dropbox and save space in your email application. Using Dropbox, you can access
and work on files from any Internet-connected computer and all files/folders stay up-to-date. Files can also be downloaded through a web interface, even
deleted files can immediately be retrieved.

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 170 words

Most blind and visually impaired people know of Descriptive Movies, or DVS movies. If you're familiar with this format of entertainment, you'll also be

FILMS ON CD.

What they're offering is unique, reading through their website shows how easy their products could make a lot of difference to a lot of people. You never
know, you may want to give one a try yourself!

Class Notes Available Anytime with NoteCentric

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 267 words

So you missed class a couple of times. Actually, more than a couple. Too much really. Luckily, you've got a friend who attends. Unluckily, that's only for
one class. For the rest of your schedule, you're left to your own devices. Short of actually having to listen to the lecture online, or sifting through
tons of inaccessible power point slides, there's not much you can do about finding decent notes. This is a problem all too common to college students worldwide.
There's only so much you can do to keep up. Now there's Notecentric, good for lazy students who don't attend and great for the laptop warrior furiously
typing up notes at one hundred words per minute. Notecentric is basically a site for social note sharing. Once you've entered your notes, you can access
them from anywhere as long as you're online. You can share them with fellow classmates too.

"Notecentric was created by Hung Truong, a student of Computer Science at the University of New Mexico. Notecentric was born of necessity. Hung found that
it was really hard to: synchronize his notes from his laptop to his desktop computer and share his existing notes with his classmates without resorting
to email.

Once notes are entered in Notecentric, users will have access to them wherever web access is available. In addition, classmates who have Notecentric accounts
will automatically have access to those notes (unless the notes are tagged as "private")." Notes appear as basic text or HTML, no graphics to get in the
way.

Serotek Makes Web 2.0 Accessible to the Blind

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 311 words

Serotek is seeking to revolutionize the adaptive technology industry. They have spun off a foundation called Accessibility Is A Right and have turned over
distribution and development of their free online screen reader System Access To Go to that foundation. Henceforth, anybody anywhere with Internet access
has free unlimited use of this screen reader, which is probably the most fully developed free screen reader available. The company indicated plans to create
other language versions of the product, with Mandarin Chinese being their first target.

SA To Go is a web-resident product stemming from Serotek's System Access software. More than a screen reader, System Access requires no installation and
provides complete control of your email, makes web surfing easy, and offers intuitive access to Microsoft Office productivity tools like Word, PowerPoint
and Excel. SA To Go makes System Access available on the Web for instant operation and has no permanence on the using computer. Users can now access System
Access software anytime, anywhere that Internet access is available.

SA To Go provides instant accessibility. Once online, users can visit
http://www.SAtoGo.com
and it appears in seconds. When finished, the user simply closes the program and any personal information vanishes leaving the host computer completely
unchanged.

Because of technologies like Fonix's text-to-speech and its small size, SA To Go loads within seconds giving the blind user the same access on the go as
his sighted peers. And since SA To Go is a true web application, accessibility is no longer an expensive option; companies that want to provide public
accessibility to customers can do so for a fraction of the cost.

The company will be surveying users on a regular basis and encouraging users to
email their ideas and comments to SAToGo[at]serotek[dot]com

Gmail in Outlook Express

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 530 words

Are you one of the many who has recently signed up for a Gmail account? Since you've done that, have you started to miss the way you handled email in Outlook Express? Some of you may have gone to Gmail because of the online email storage that comes with it, but would you rather use Outlook Express and go back to a screen-reader friendly way to get email?

To send or receive email from your Gmail account in Outlook Express, follow these steps.

  1. First, you need to make sure the POP3 access is activated in your Gmail account. To do this, go to Gmail and click on the Settings link at the top of the page. Choose the Forwarding and POP tab and make sure either the "Enable POP for all mail" or "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on" is selected. (You will probably just want to choose the "from now on" option, because all the email that you receive from this point on will go to Outlook Express). Next, you need to choose what
you want to do with the email that is accessed with POP. You can either keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox, archive Gmail's copy or delete Gmail's copy. This option is strictly up to you. Once you have chosen that, click on Save Changes.

  2. Open Outlook Express and hit ALT+T or click on Tools, then arrow down to or click on Accounts.

  3. Click on the Add button and choose Mail.

  4. Type in your name and tab to, or click Next.

  5. Enter your Gmail email address. Click, or tab to Next.

  6. Screen reader users will use the tab key to move through the various options on the following screen. You need to make sure that POP3 is selected under the "My incoming mail server is a (blank) server" space.

  7. Type in "pop.gmail.com" (without the quotations) under the "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server:"

  8. Type in "smtp.gmail.com" (without the quotations) under the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:" spot. Click Next when done.

  9. Now, you're going to enter your full Gmail email address under the "Account name" and enter your Gmail password under "Password."

  10. Click, or tab to Next and then Finish.

  11. Now you're going to highlight the new pop.gmail.com account, and choose Properties from there. Screen reader users will tab to the properties button. Go to the Servers tab.

  12. Ensure the line that says "My server requires authentication" is checked under the Outgoing Mail Server section.

  13. Click on, or arrow over to the Advanced tab.

  14. Make sure that the place that says "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is checked under the Outgoing mail (SMTP): and also under the Incoming mail (POP3): choices.

  15. Once that is all checked, type in the number "465" under the Outgoing server (SMTP): place and make sure "995" is typed in under the Incoming server (POP3) section.

  16. Click OK and Close.

Yeah, that was a lot of steps! Once you get through all of that, everything will be set up and you can start using your Gmail account in Outlook Express and get back to the way you used to do email. No Trackbacks

Convert blogs to podcasts

Category:internet | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 463 words

Here's four services that turn blogs and news feeds into audio files or podcasts.

Talkr.com

If you can point Talkr.com to a Really Simple Syndication feed, it will convert it. Talkr.com can also provide you with a podcast of your favorite news sources, so you can have your own sort of radio newscasts downloaded to a portable player. Talkr.com is free if you listen to blogs that have arrangements with the service. A subscription plan is available if you want other blogs processed for playback.

Speakwire.com

Speakwire is offered by CEC Systems, whose primary business is Speegle (www.speegle.co.uk), a search service that speaks the results of Web searches.

Speakwire users can pick news feeds, collate them, and play them as a speaking newswire service. Speakwire news feeds by voice are available free at www.speakwire.com.

AudioDizer.com

AudioDizer uses AT&T's text-to-speech software to convert articles fed from newspaper and magazine Websites to MP3 files. The stories can be read by male or female voices in a variety of accents. AudioDizer can even add short music clips to turn a news story into a radio-style experience.

PimpMyNews

The world's first "talking social news site" at http://www.PimpMyNews.com is a free "new media" service that lets anyone with Internet access or an MP3 player listen to thousands of breaking text news and blog stories that they would otherwise have to read.

Throughout the day, the site's proprietary software scours the Internet for text stories matching each user's preferences. The site then converts text content to near-human sounding audio in real time, using text-to-speech technology similar to technology used in talking GPS navigation systems.

During the sign up process, users select their favorite topics
from hundreds of text-based news and blog publishers to create a "personalized talking newspaper." For deep personalization, users can choose content from fifty-seven unique categories, including Technology, Entertainment, Sports, Politics, Colleges, Business, Visually Impaired and more.

Users with iPods, iPhones, Zunes and other MP3 players automatically receive fresh content matching their preferences every morning for listening on-the-go, whenever and wherever they desire, allowing users to stay current on their favorite news
and blogs without being at a computer. The company believes this feature will appeal to people with active lifestyles and commuters.

The site also includes rich social media tools for users to rate,
share and participate in the distribution of news and blog stories. With a single click, users can email audio versions of
stories to friends, or post them to Facebook, Twitter, Digg,
Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Mixx, and other social sites.

Anyone with Internet access can sign up for the free service at
