How to Block Specific Websites on Your Computer
Category:Computers | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 571 wordsYou might have the knowledge of how to block and unblock selected sites in browsers like Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, but what about blocking specific websites on all browsers? If you block some websites on your computer, nobody can access them through any means unless you decide to unblock them. It's easy, so let's check it out!
The need to block sites arises due to different reasons. Most often parents wish to block those sites that are not appropriate for their children, especially those related to pornography, social networking and gambling. In some instances, the spamming sites and unsecure sites that pose a problem for the frequent surfers can be restricted by blocking the problematic URLs.
All you have to do is explained here.
Go to the Start>Run and type “cmd”. Click on OK so that the Command Prompt Window appears.
In the Command Prompt Window, type “notepad C: /Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts” minus the quotes, and hit the Enter key.
You can see the hosts file notepad popped out. In the notepad, you will enter the list of sites that need to be blocked in your system.
Note: An alternate option to access the notepad is to go to My Computer icon and follow the path... No Trackbacks

How to boost your internet speed
Category:Computers | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 289 wordsNeed to increase your Internet connection speed? There are a number of tweaks out there that will enable you to maximize your system's performance and likewise, there are lots of things you can do to tweak your Internet connection to boost Internet speed. There are tons of them out there, but this article is going to focus on one very well hidden way in Windows. NOTE: this is for the advanced Windows user, do this if you're really familiar with Windows and your screen reader.
Un-reserving bandwidth
By Default, XP reserves 20% of your bandwidth for it's own use. This is a crying shame and should be undone immediately. To do this, you will not require any additional software, just follow the steps below to make changes to your Windows XP.
- Access the Group Policy Editor. This can be done by typing gpedit.msc in the Run box (Start, and then Run).
- Use your arrow and tab keys to navigate to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/
Network/QOS Packet Scheduler. If you have some vision, this will be in the pane on the left side.
- Once you've navigated to the right setting, hit the tab key and find Limit reservable bandwidth, either right-click this or use the applications key and select properties.
- Now this might seem a bit weird, as the State will say "Not Configured" but Windows by default will reserve 20%. So the trick is to set it to reserve
0%. You can do this by clicking enabled and then setting the Bandwidth Limit % to 0.
- Hit OK then close the Group Policy Editor.
That's it! You're done with this tweak. Reboot your computer and see if you notice a difference in your connection speed, pages should load a bit faster now.

Unlock files in windows
Category:Computers | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 278 wordsHas your Windows operating system ever bugged you with any of these error messages:
- Cannot delete file: Access is denied.
- There has been a sharing violation.
- The source or destination file may be in use.
- The file is in use by another program or user.
- Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.
These can sometimes be fixed by closing the application that is using the file. But, for all the other times, it may be the work of spyware, a virus or
just that Windows is being grouchy. Well, after today, you can say goodbye to those error messages. Yep, they will no longer exist with a program called
Unlocker!
Unlocker allows you to unlock the processes that are preventing you from deleting, renaming, opening or editing your files. By doing that, you are put back
in control of your computer.
- Download and install Unlocker from this direct-download link: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/unlocker1.8.5.exe.
- Right click the file that is giving you trouble and select the Unlocker option.
- If the folder or file has been locked, the list of "lockers" will appear.
- Select Unlock All and you will be free to do whatever you want with your files. You can delete, rename, move them somewhere else or edit them. The choice
is yours!
Let me tell you, this program can be a real headache reliever! I must warn you though, don't ever unlock any files deep inside of your hard drive, as it can cause Windows to malfunction. Only delete such a file if a
trusted virus program has told you to do so.

To VOIP or not to VOIP- that is the question! - by Dottye Blake
Category:Computers | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 1,082 wordsI used to love the TV commericals that Vonage, a well-known provider of VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol telephone service. My favorite one was the
one with the rocket that went berserk and flew all over, with people dashing around madly to get out of the way. I watched the wayward rocket totally mesmerized,
and then started laughing so hard when the Vonage theme music started playing that I almost fell off the couch! I liked the one where the photographer
fell into the fountain, too. I wish Vonage would bring those commercials back- the ones that they show now are so dull in comparison. Most of these ads
try to sell their calling services based on how much cheaper they are in comparison to traditional telephoning plans. They also discuss quality and clearness
of telephone calls. If you are smart, you have, in all probability, questioned how much of this is honest information and how much is hype.
VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is plausibly one of the most radical advances in the telecom industry. It permits you to speak to another person on
the other side of the world by employing a digital network connection precisely the same way that you get e-mail or surf internet sites. Due to the fact
that your voice is changed into a digital signal, it can be transmitted around the block, on the other side of the country, or around the world for exactly
the same price. For VOIP telephone calls, the idea of long distance does not exist. A single basic benefit is its low-price. If you have a fast Internet
connection (DSL or cable), you can make computer-to-computer telephone calls anyplace on the globe FREE. Computer-to-phone telephone calls normally have
a fee, but are usually still less expensive than typical telephone service. Perks like call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and 3way-calling,
are packaged with VOIP telephone service at no additional fee. At the same time you are speaking on the telephone, you can transmit graphics and documents.

Windows Vista DRM: "Suicidal" - Bill Lindner
Category:Computers | Posted by: babagrr | Add comment 693 wordsA lot of the hoopla surrounding the new Windows Vista operating system (OS) is based on it's new multimedia capabilities.
However, users purchasing Vista to use the much-hyped and enhanced multimedia capabilities to watch high definition or blu-ray DVDs -- or to listen to audio
CDs -- may be in for a very upsetting surprise. No Trackbacks
