Top 10 Celebrities Who Have Converted to Islam

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, including in the U.S. Since the 9/11 terror attacks, Islam has seen a burst of growth with more than 1,200 mosques being built. From 1990-2000, around 12.5 million more people converted to Islam than to Christianity. In fact, the number of Muslims in the U.S. after 9/11 more than doubled.

With average citizens turning towards Islam, famous celebs have also come forward, admitting to the belief in Allah.

Here is a list of celebrities you probably didn’t know are Muslim.

10- Janet Jackson

The former pop star made headlines when she converted to Islam to marry her Arab fiance. Jackson reportedly left the music industry because of these demanding beliefs, since Islam doesn’t take too kindly to music, dancing, or the female form on display.

9- Dave Chappelle

Chappelle told Time Magazine, “I’m a Muslim, I don’t necessarily practice the way a good Muslim is supposed to practice but I believe in these tenants.” The comedian allegedly left his controversial show because of his religious beliefs.

8- Dr. Oz

Host of “The Dr Oz Show,” Dr. Mehmet Oz was born to Turkish parents. He adopted a form of Sufism from his father’s devout following.

7- Muhammad Ali

Perhaps the most recognized boxer in history, Ali was one of the first American celebrities to publicly proclaim Islam as his religion, subsequently changing his name. To this day, few know that Ali practiced Sunni Islam.

6- Ellen Burstyn

Emmy-winning actress Burstyn follows Sufi Islam, a looser form of the religion, which explains why she performs without a burqa to protect her modesty.

5- Ice Cube

The rapper-turned-actor has openly expressed his religious beliefs, but claims to be a “mellow” Muslim, who doesn’t practice devoutly. In fact, he doesn’t plan on giving up drugs or drinking any time soon, regardless of Islam’s strict disapproval.

4- Mike Tyson

The famous retired boxer admittedly converted to Islam while incarcerated for rape. Tyson openly acknowledged his belief in Allah, claiming Islam had an influence in his life after prison.

3- T-Pain

Rapper-turned-singer and producer T-Pain is a devout Islamist. Despite Islam’s strict laws on marrying non-Muslims, the performer wedded a Christians woman, an act that is considered adultery in Islam and is punishable by death.

2- Akon

The recording artist and record producer grew up in Senegal practicing Islam. As part of the Muslim culture and religion, Akon admitted to having multiple wives, stating that one woman could never satisfy any man.

1- Shaquille O’Neal

The retired pro basketball player and current sports analyst on “Inside the NBA” confirmed his Muslim faith, also promising to make the Hajj to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

My Journey to Islam: Muhammad Ali Led me to Islam

Yahya, a 46-year old Filipino, has embraced Islam since he was 27.  His family belongs to the Committee of the Church and his brother is a priest.

Before Islam he was following Jesus Christ but not the real Jesus; the son of Mary and the Messenger of Allah he believes in today, but the doctrine of the Catholic church.

His love for boxing and for Muhammad Ali made him name his child after the Muslim boxing champion; Muhammad, knowing nothing about the meaning of the name.  And that’s where his journey to Islam began.
